American Dream
"American Dream"
Music & Lyrics by Scott Cooley.
Democracy, hypocrisy, corporations don't bail out you and me
Home ownership, prosperity, can't forget the statue of liberty
Self-righteousness, police of the world
Happiness for every boy and girl
Expectations, social classes, don't forget your rose-colored glasses
New York, Hollywood, America misunderstood
Christian religion, and way too much television
Right to bear arms, suicide, murder rate, violent crime
Your children's education, can't control population
The American Dream is never what it seems from the inside
And when you're outside looking in, it might not amount to a lot
If you're keeping score, you'll find you always want more
You won't ever be happy with what you've got
So don't try to chase the American dream
'Cause you can never have it all
The higher you climb, the more lonely you'll be
With no one to catch you when you fall
Baseball, Superman, melting pot, frying pan
Fast food, obesity, low life expectancy
Write a blog, surf the web, skateboard, bang your head
Freedom, unity, the land of opportunity
The American Dream is never what it seems from the inside
And when you're outside looking in, it might not amount to a lot
If you're keeping score, you'll find you always want more
You won't ever be happy with what you've got
So don't try to chase the American dream
'Cause you can never have it all
The higher you climb, the more lonely you'll be
With no one to catch you when you fall
Satisfaction's not guaranteed
You probably have more than you need
Think twice about the price because it can't be bought
You might lose sight of what you sought
Foreigners love to complain about the USA
But secretly, they're tryin' to find a way in
When they keep score, they should be careful what they wish for
What they're tryin' to attain is never a game they can win
So be careful where you search for the American Dream
You might not like what you find at all
The farther you go, the more lonely you'll be
With no one to catch you when you fall
